Week Notes 26#26

  • A busy week before our trip to Canada πŸŽ‰
    • (Full Canada holiday writeup to come)
  • It was very toasty this week
    • As a way to reduce the overall heat, I ended up leaving my PC off while working, and found that worked quite well - but does mean I need to listen to music through my phone, which isn't ideal
    • Sainsburys had the shutters down over their fridges
      • But people didn't put them back after perusing - so spent a bit of time going round and putting them back while looking around
      • but it also tripled the amount of time I spent looking for things, as I didn't want to keep lifting the shutters, but also couldn't quite tell where things were without seeing them (or without seeing nearby things)
  • A couple of hours before leaving for holiday, I saw two GHSAs pop up for oapi-codegen (which are now fixed) which was somewhat poor timing as both Marcin and I were off, but fortunately they weren't that big an issue
  • Played some Uno on the plane, and got thrashed by the computer players
  • Airport taxi was a bit subpar given the heat, but the driver seemingly not wanting to use their AC - we ended up having to cool down by the driver opening their windows down the M1 πŸ˜…
  • Incredibly angry about the layoffs at Elastic
    • Especially considering some of the best people I've ever worked with were impacted, which is so very frustrating (but not as bad as being impacted, I know)
    • Posting a LinkedIn message of :elasticheart: also ended up garnering some engagement, as I was a little vague about it (while it wasn't fully public)
    • But it did end up leading to a lot of profile traffic and engagement, so yay me? I'm hoping to be able to help out folks affected where possible - and if you have any good jobs going that my network may be interested in, let me know!
  • Firefox Nightly on Android was annoying me, as it had a shortcut called "Uninstall why" - in the place where "new private tab" was on the app - which would keep trying to uninstall the app and messed with my low-sleep-and-jet-lagged brain, but thankfully after a few days it disappeared
  • Ahead of going away, made some tweaks to some of the automation around my site, so it wouldn't break while I was away when publishing a "I've finished reading ..." post
  • Looking up some reviews, I decided to give the Priority Pass a go for the airport lounges, and it was good - we had a nice place to chill while waiting for our plane to be called
    • Which is good, because it was delayed, so we had an extra couple of hours of waiting around anxiously, watching other flights going to similar areas being cancelled 😬 The not knowing was the worst, but we got there eventually
    • But that did also mean we got there later than planned, and had 0 time to see any of the city before bed

  • Saturday Night Live (Season 51)
    • The joke swap was very good this season
  • Shelter (2026)
  • Am I OK? (2022)
  • The Naked Gun (2025)
    • Literally brought me to tears, it was so incredibly funny, and such a great follow-up to the originals
    • I was sad I'd not managed to sit down and watch it until now - and I hope I didn't annoy too many people on the plane 😹
