Week Notes 25#48

  • Monday was very busy for two reasons:
    • The v2 of Shai Hulud (Sha1-Hulud) worm landed, and so spent a fair bit of the day keeping an eye on internal + external discussions
      • Some good discussions were had off the back of the Minimum Release Age work we've done recently
      • But was also sad to not be able to look at how to detect + contain using DMD
    • Made a good first pass on my blog post about building an Agent for Renovate config, which should be out in the next couple of weeks
  • A disappointing Thursday morning with some planned house work falling through
  • Had a great time seeing Stevie Martin at Canalhouse
    • I've been following her for years, and was especially excited to see her on Taskmaster, so was really cool that she was touring and we could see her!
    • She was super funny, and was nice to go with Anna and Carol
    • Anna and I had a nice pre-gig dinner at Bombay Delicatessen
    • Stevie's dog was super cute too πŸ₯Ί
  • Thursday and Friday were very busy work days - ~10 PRs of lots of work around our instrumentation (with OpenTelemetry)
    • It's super satisfying adding in the instrumentation and seeing how quickly the iterative improvements can lead to better visualisation - and I've learned a number of things around how things actually work under the hood by doing it πŸ€“
  • A late Friday evening drive to Netherfield to pick up new windscreen wipers - after we've been meaning to do it for many months
    • And it's still so weird driving around there, given it feels like I'm back on my driving lessons
  • I've had YUSSI, OHKAY - Enemies on replay a fair bit - good high-energy song
  • Didn't end up being able to walk the dogs with Carol and Alan unfortunately today
  • Got some good Black Friday deals, and an annoying Amazon delivery this morning (while we were out for a walk) which was 0800-1100 (but naturally didn't arrive until ~1800)
  • Pizza this week wasn't as good as usual, and no ham meant I tried mushrooms for a change, and it brought back some lovely memories of pizzas with Kaki
  • Didn't get the house Christmas ready, but did at least bring the bits down, and get a few things tidied
  • Made minestrone soup, which was been a nice alternative to shop-bought
  • Instead of replying to various emails I've had on my TODO list for a bit, spent some time today going through my wacky inbox (~33k unread) and clearing things out (down to ~21k unread) and unsubscribed from quite a few things, as well as stopped notifications coming through for things like newsletters (where I can instead periodically check them)
  • Including - finally - sorting out our Virgin Media contract and saving a chunk of money each month
  • About ~20 minutes later, we had a blip in Internet connection and I was worried it'd be down while we switched contracts 🫣
  • Interested to see what Spotify Wrapped is gonna be like

Reading:

  • Cibola Burn
  • Finished reading Program Management for Open Source Projects

Watched:

  • (No The Bear this week)
  • Kim's Convenience
  • Nobody Wants This
  • Stranger Things
    • Given there's been a lot of discussion about it
    • Only watched one episode so far
    • Watching the "what happened last season", it was a wild to hear "Chrissy wake up" and be transported back to the many memes from years past
  • Jingle Bell Heist
    • It was ... a film πŸ˜… Wouldn't really recommend - we had surprisingly high expectations as we love heist movies
  • Home Alone
  • Bringing CHristmas Home (as a crap Christmas film to multi-task through)
