Week Notes 25#20

A delayed week notes this week, as we were away for the long weekend:

  • Had a random nosebleed on Monday, which wasn't great, and ended up significantly waking me up, so I was up from ~0400, and carefully showering later in the day seemed to trigger it again, so ended up having to be super careful all day
  • Cleaned up and blogged about my library for getting text/template control over Cobra CLI doc generation, and glad it's now in a much better state to be used!
    • And as I'm writing this, thought it may be worth an x-post onto /r/golang (which ain't doing particularly well - oh well)
  • Wrote up the difference between depName and packageName with Renovate, and worked to upstream some docs about it
  • My post about what it's like to be a maintainer went live on opensource.org and hopefully it's interesting for folks to read what it's like (for me)
  • Realised that my keyboard (which I use for work) which has been losing its connection is because the USB-A connector to the keyboard needs to be exactly straight, so at least it's not that I need to replace the keyboard/cable
  • Wrote a lightweight MCP Server for work's Backstage setup, as a way to get more of an understanding of MCP, the excellent mark3labs/mcp-go, and a means to more straightforwardly query "who owns this repo?"
  • Had a kernel panic when booting my PC which included a handy QR code to get the full stacktrace, which was a very mich quality-of-life improvement
  • Finally fixed my site's apex domain not working (it's been pointing to some outdated A records for the Cloudfront distribution for a couple of weeks) and documented how to update it in the future
  • Naughty But Nice has officially been fully rebranded - after some repainting earlier in the week, there's now a new sign and name - we've not yet been since it changed hands, and it'll be interesting to see what's like now
  • Looking forward to chatting with Tessa on 99 Dev Problems in a couple of weeks πŸ‘€
  • Got a bit "nerd sniped" about how to have a Dependency Dashboard in Renovate, if the repo doesn't have Issues enabled - as Mend's offering provides - but managed to work it out, and blog post soon (once I've created a minimal POC)
  • Did some slightly rushed last minute shopping before the weekend
  • Noticed all my Slack sign-ins have been lost on my phone which is frustrating
  • Fixed a couple of bugs with renovate-pretty-log-tui, which may have been missed when I was rebasing for the final release
  • A good OpenUK Digital Meetup
  • Good chats with Giannis about DMD
  • Continuing to cull my LinkedIn feed of folks I don't strongly want to see - nothing personal!
  • Headed down to London on Saturday, to then go to Guildford for my Granny's 100th(!!) birthday party
    • On Saturday night, we had a nice steak at Miller and Carter πŸ˜‹πŸ₯©πŸΈπŸ·πŸŸ
    • Was lovely to see everyone on Sunday, and catch up with folks I've not seen in a few years - or who Anna's not met before - and of course celebrate a huge milestone
    • Was a lovely spread and excellent hosting
    • Was super interesting to see - for the first time in the flesh - the "happy 100th birthday" card from the King + Queen
    • We didn't take Cookie as Anna's parents were happy to take her, which made things much easier
  • Anna's parents offered an extra night of Cookie staying, so we took the opportunity to book a lovely night away at the Cowley Manor Experimental which was nice
  • Gousto got delivered while we were away - despite the fact that for Bank Holidays they usually deliver the day after not the day before and frustratingly, no staff were around to help chat to and work out what we could do 🀷🏼
    • But thank you Carol for saving us πŸ’œ
