It doesn’t mean that we should enable them to tell racist, homophobic, transphobic etc jokes in the name of comedy. Ask yourselves why you think these jokes are funny and then you have your answer. It shouldn’t prevent us from calling out the problematic

There certainly is - check out https://hire.jvt.me for how I've done it using #Microformats2 (there's a link at the bottom which links out to how it would be parsed). More details at https://www.jvt.me/posts/2021/05/25/microformats-resume/
Thanks Barry, I appreciate that! Would definitely be interested to hear how other folks approach their own team cultures
I didn't make it to the event in-person so definitely missed out on the hallway track, but am excited to being able to catch up on the awesome talks 🙌🏼

A quick definition of Open-Source
Fabien Potencier (@fabpot)Thu, 04 Nov 2021 08:26 GMT
You mean source available, not Open Source?
Want it to be open source? Great! Go for it. Want it to have all the upsides of open source, and none of the side effects that might make you uncomfortable? Get the fuck right out of town with that. The upside of being open should come with the potential for others to benefit.

Stop thinking AI is magic. It’s not magic. It’s three if/then statements in a trench coat backed up against Grandma’s photo album and a dump truck full of bank statements.

An incident?
If you think pair programming is inefficient, try waiting hours to get your code reviewed & having to context switch between tasks while you wait. And then switch back when you get the feedback & have to rethink your approach because you weren’t discussing it as you wrote it.

Just added myself a profile on name.pn at https://name.pn/jamie-tanna for my name, pronouns and pronunciation of my name - great service! I think I'm also going to build a similar thing on my site, too
To my comment on the word "P*ki" being unacceptable and not banter, here are some responses on Linked In. People with their job titles clearly in the public domain and zero issues with defending the use of the term Good morning to you all.Partha Kar 🇮🇳 🇬🇧🎥🏏🐶 (@parthaskar)Fri, 05 Nov 2021 07:02 GMT

if the “boss makes a dollar, i make a dime” line was real amazon workers would all have 19 billion dollars. if the “boss makes a thousand and gives me a cent” line was real, amazon workers would all have over 100 million dollars

Things like this, and very slow build/test/deploy lifecycles are pretty low-hanging fruit - makes a huge difference, as well as making your teams happier!
We recently found that the new 2021 M1 MacBooks cut our Android build times in half. So for a team of 9, $32k of laptops will actually save $100k in productivity over 2022. The break-even point happens at 3 months. TL;DR Engineering hours are much more expensive than laptops!Jameson (@softwarejameson)Wed, 03 Nov 2021 18:52 GMT
i often think about how a lot of programming is running into the same bugs over and over again, and how being exposed to common bugs (and being shown how to handle them!) gives you a huge advantage

The moment I start _thinking_ about something it becomes a WIP because thinking _is_ work. If thinking wasn’t work, I think a lot of us would have far more energy at the end of the day.Post details

As a society, we were willing to call a man “Puff Daddy,” then “P. Diddy” and then just “Diddy.” But if a Trans person asks us to use the pronouns “they/them,” we freak out?Hari Kondabolu (@harikondabolu)Wed, 03 Nov 2021 22:12 GMT

Not a great leading indicator when the person in charge of the hostile product decision gets promoted to lead up the whole dev division, including GitHub. One of the worst parts of devrel is when management decides to ring the register and sell off the earned developer trust.Post details
The recent open source moves by Microsoft are interesting. On one hand, I love the power of a vocal community; on the other, I hate to see community/devrel teams left to clean up after a bonehead decision from an executive who is clearly disconnected from the reality of the work.
