LaTeX is a system of macros that works on top of TeX, a notoriously arcane typesetting program written by Don Knuth. The default constructions tend to be, er, liberal with vertical space and line breaks, and telling the typesetter "hey, can you not" often needs TeXBook wizardry.

A trans friend asking you to refer to them as their new gender identity isn't really the same as the state compelling speech in this way e.g. Canada and to a lesser extent UK. IMO it would be unfriendly to use the unpreferred pronouns with a friend (except like ze/zir etc.)
