In the backchannels I have with software engineers, the act of firing a respected engineer after he publicly responded to Elon criticising Twitter’s engineering team - and explaining choices - broke the straw with many. It’s a chilling message. Contradict Elon and you’re fired.

My question on “who would work at Twitter, given options” now includes that of working there you should expect to receive criticism in public, and firing on the spot for responding in public. The pool of experience sw engineers who would choose Twitter just shrank some more.
