It baffles me a bit that companies are still using "unforeseen circumstances" as a reason for layoffs or hiring freezes. After a year of watching other companies do the same, at what point is it no longer considered "unforeseen"?

My thinking was that GDS would be a learning organisation, or at least one willing to listen. Some parts did. Many parts did not. This had consequences. Technical consequences and "need to refactor" consequences. I realised I had only enough energy for limited fights.

As GDS has a reputation for being an exemplar then there is a belief that the processes and technology choices are, in some way "right". Challenging assumptions in an organisation that believes itself to be "right" causes conflict.

GDS has also got some really good people in leadership trying to navigate some difficult waters. The product side of GDS is really solid. The tech side though has some challenges.
