Why not do both, actions and words. People are telling you that the word guys makes them feel excluded. So start with actions, such as listening to them and believing them and then words, like saying "people" or "folks". The decision to ignore them is itself an action.

How it is acceptable to communicate, particularly when it comes to nouns that refer to groups of people, change over time. What's arbitrary is where you are choosing to dig your heels in.

The language you use is a part of being inclusive, you cannot separate the two. This is such an obvious point I'm surprised I have to make it. When you refer to a group as "guys" you are by the dictionary definition of that word excluding people, which is not inclusive.

People look to you as a leader. In using language like this you set a standard that others will follow. You send the message that such language is acceptable, that men are the default and those who are not men are secondary and that affects how people who look to you behave.

There are plenty of words you won’t use because other people might find them offensive. Adapting how we present our messages to ensure they are received in the spirit they intended is a basic communication skill. Why wouldn’t you do this for the word “guys”?

Hmm... Not great... I know its just a word, but, it's not at all inclusive, and worse can rightly be a trigger for some too. There are so many better words to use, I like @shanselman's "friends", I tend to just use "everyone". Being "used to saying" something is at best lazy.
