I write a weekly newsletter (devopsish.com) about DevOps, Cloud Native, Open Source, industry news, & culture If you're underrepresented in tech and you have any RSS feed I can subscribe to (even if it's only GitHub) I would like to add it to my regular reading.

TOP TIP: I turned on a filter in settings that mutes all tweets from accounts which haven’t confirmed their e-mail & mobile number. Amazingly it has instantly wiped all racism from my feed, coz surprisingly people who express those kind of views don’t like being identified.

If your AI processes AGPL licensed source code and thereby incorporates it, is your AI code required to be released to the public? Roll 3d6 and hire that many lawyers.

Existing as a trans person in the UK is very weird right now: apparently cis gatekeepers should have the right to determine what I can do with my body for my entire life, but asking people to wear a mask during a global health emergency is a bridge too far? Make it make sense.

A lot of people asking what the problem is with "just trusting the vaccine". A few problems that occur to me: a) No vaccine is 100% effective. Even if only 5% of people are susceptible, that's literally millions of people in the UK. b) Half the country aren't fully vaccinated 1/3

In case it's not clear what's happening here: @github's Copilot "autocompletes" the fast inverse square root implementation from Quake III — which is GPL2+ code. It then autocompletes a BSD2 license comment (with the wrong copyright holder). This is fine.

There's a lot of extra context needed in async comms, including clear communication of trust, expectations, and deliverables. Here's an example from my talk on remote/async work to highlight the difference. It looks like a lot, but it pays back in saved time and stress quickly.

Post details

Sufficient communication in remote/async environments often feels like over communication. But in the absence of being “seen”, people perceive their requests disappearing into the ether, not knowing if they’re being worked on. Communicating frequently helps ease those concerns.
