Compare two numbers: how much money you're allowed to spend on a book, conference, or software without approval. And how many people you can invite to an hour-long meeting multiplied by their average hourly compensation.Corey Quinn (@QuinnyPig)Tue, 11 May 2021 02:47 +0000

Unit testing requires significantly less skill, time investment, and infrastructure than any other form of testing and almost any other form of verification. So anybody can pick it up and apply it to any project. That's why it's the go-to technique

One thing I've wondered about is why software folks so often use unit testing as their go-to testing technique. When I've worked at companies that ship few enough bugs that it would be considered a failure to have one serious bug in a year, unit testing has been a last resort.Dan Luu (@danluu)Tue, 11 May 2021 17:42 +0000

*PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT* Please stop saying "This is giving me PTSD" or "This gave me PTSD" when it... didn't. The biggest perception problem in our industry is, as an IC, you grow up to be an architect who design systems. No. There are very senior people whose job is only to maintain very critical tools and libraries that doesn't require much system design work.

I still write code for a bunch of reasons. Some of that even runs in production (mainly via open source contributions) or inspires code that does. Prototypes for discussion, demonstrating something to a customer, demos, data analysis, exploration.

I’ve been told by some VCs not to code at all, because of how it will make me look “Junior.” I learn so much more by actually writing the code than by reading about the product. This may seem obvious to a programmer. But I promise you it’s not obvious to most VCs.🟣 Lee Edwards (@terronk)Sat, 08 May 2021 20:09 +0000
