It was only a few years ago that I did a gig at a financial company and when I asked about writing tests I was told “we don’t have time!”. My response of “how will I know it works?” was met with silence. (I wrote tests and finished well ahead of schedule. Then left.)

This is a terrible way to interview people. Not everyone has the time (or desire!) to work on personal or open source projects. Judging candidates based on work you expect them to have done in their spare time is unfair & will exclude huge groups of people.
