Ya know, if I wasn’t so bad at systems design interviews (it’s always these that ruin me), I might have gotten an offer from Twitter at the start of the year, and right now would have been a VERY different experience. Sometimes you have to be thankful for what you failed at.

In the backchannels I have with software engineers, the act of firing a respected engineer after he publicly responded to Elon criticising Twitter’s engineering team - and explaining choices - broke the straw with many. It’s a chilling message. Contradict Elon and you’re fired.

My question on “who would work at Twitter, given options” now includes that of working there you should expect to receive criticism in public, and firing on the spot for responding in public. The pool of experience sw engineers who would choose Twitter just shrank some more.

Serious question: outside of outsized, unvested stock on the line or high compensation, why would any software engineer with options consider working at Twitter, going forward? Policies changing overnight and an owner acting visibly hostile towards staff who built Twitter.

Three senior software engineers fired in one day for criticising Elon’s statement on how Twitter’s backend works. The other two firings were now communicated on Twitter but also happened yesterday. I haven’t heard of an engineer being fired promptly over a tweet, much less 3.

It was a useful way to provide visibility via attribution for third party clients, like Tweetie (which was acquired and became the Twitter iOS app) or Tweetdeck (RIP). It was also a useful status indicator (e.g. whether the tweet was sent via desktop or mobile).
