to clarify for non-UK followers, "pigs-in-blankets" is the name of a dish served around Christmas time where you wrap little sausages in bacon, and is categorically NOT a cute nickname for the new member of Raspberry Pi staff

As someone who went from minimum wage to working in tech w/o a degree I can guarantee that in my country people would say I slept with someone to get the opportunity while people in the US would assume I had rich parents who had connections. Neither is true 🤷♀️

So we've now had two long threads, presented as if they were revealing some big conspiracy, that basically, just... confirmed a bunch of things the company had already said publicly, and showed pretty standard (boring) trust & safety work. Imagine having an economic system where firms mobilize extraordinary quantities of energy, resources and human labour to produce goods, and then incinerate them in order to keep prices and profits high. Heh, saw a comment suggesting that the only way to deal with AI art is to make it so uncool and mockable that no one wants to use it. And honestly, I think that’s a better idea than 90% of them. Our sidekiq workers had a bit of trouble and weren’t processing jobs which resulted in no posts from other instances being processed for a couple of days. The realisation of “oh, I guess that would be one of us that needs to fix that” was fun 😅 Gone are the days of just hoping an engineer in the SRE team at Big Social Media Company will wake up and fix it. #MastoAdmin

It baffles me a bit that companies are still using "unforeseen circumstances" as a reason for layoffs or hiring freezes. After a year of watching other companies do the same, at what point is it no longer considered "unforeseen"?

This is actually viral. I have never worked for GDS but use a lot of GDS-developed stuff in my work and I also bristle when people criticise it but also bristle when people are too complimentary about GDS - probably for completely different reasons to anyone who has worked there
