Interesting to see that the latest release of phpMyAdmin (used to enable a vast number of websites, and a tool I haven't installed in years) replaces "master/slave" terms with "primary/replica". Hope can spring from unexpected places. phpmyadmin.net/files/5.2.0/

Successfully deployed the only sentence you need to be able to say to be a principal engineer: "What are you actually trying to do?"

Confirmed that Sourcegraph let go 8% of staff: 24 folks on Tuesday. No engineers were let go, but 5 directors were laid off and non-tech teams impacted. The curious part of this is how Sourcegraph has yet to touch its $125M raised in 2021. Tells a lot about market predictions.

If given the choice of being right or being kind- always choose to be kind. Would rather lose a thousand arguments than bring more hurtful bullshit into the world

Have you considered not charging $138 to take a 7 a.m. train on a Sunday morning?

From when I talked with the software engineer quitting a FinTech venturing into crypto. My stance on crypto is the same: I don’t endorse it, don’t promote it, have refused and will keep refusing to take money from crypto companies. I did my research and it’s my own, firm stand.

"I am a software engineer working at a FinTech. I handed in my resignation after my company is venturing into crypto which I am morally against." I applaud people voting with their feet for things they believe in. I vote with my business: not taking money from crypto companies

She’s not the only one quitting for not wanting to work on stuff promoting or endorsing crypto. Talked with a software engineer who quit Block after the course changed to crypto and another dev leaving a FinTech pivoting to crypto. I applaud people voting with their feet.

Well, now that it's public at least I can talk about it: This is a major reason why I quit, and specifically why I quit much earlier than I had originally planned. I don't want to be associated with anyone dealing in crypto nonsense.

The AskUK subreddit has peaked, and can now be closed down. It will never top this brilliance.

I came out as gay to my work colleagues and some of my friends several years ago. I came out to my family last year. Everyone is so supportive. But it still feels like I’m living a double life because I don’t discuss it publicly. I’m changing that, starting now 🏳️‍🌈 Happy #pride !

More seriously, tech workers could *at a bare minimum* ask themselves "was there literally a Black Mirror episode about this?" and, if so, maybe not build the thing.

There was a Men to Avoid list in the first stall of the women's bathroom in the campus center the whole time I was at Wesleyan, from 89 to 93. This isn't some new invention of "cancel culture," it's just how women try to keep each other safer when no one in power gives a shit
