One of the myths is how, when companies like Amazon include non-compete agreements in contracts for all employees, they only enforce it for executives. Oh no. Amazon can enforce it for anyone. Like for this L4 software engineer - the lowest level - who tried to join Microsoft:Gergely Orosz (@GergelyOrosz)Mon, 20 Jun 2022 19:50 +0000
Full article here: businessinsider.com/amazon-noncomp… I said this before, and will say it again: if you join Amazon, negotiate a higher package so you can pay if they invoke the 18-month non-compete with no pay. Or maybe pass joining, if they don't remove it. twitter.com/GergelyOrosz/s…Post details
Now that Microsoft is getting rid of their non-compete agreements, it’s worth remembering that Amazon *will* enforce theirs. Anyone taking a job there - esp if a senior one - should budget to get paid above the market to cover 6-12 months of unpaid vacation after leaving Amazon.twitter.com/Werner/status/…Gergely Orosz (@GergelyOrosz)Thu, 09 Jun 2022 20:49 +0000

Lots of technical debt occurs because nobody at the time knew how to solve a specific problem or set of related problems. You tend to recognize patterns in a code base or project

So odd how she's wearing a lacy, deep-cleavage, spaghetti tank and perfectly blow-dried hair -- and not a 2-week-unwashed sweatshirt w stains on it & a messy topknot, like an actual roommate/friend would.

Trying to use a Mac again properly. It's just so comically bad! A short (though no doubt growing) thread of basic things that Macs can't do. (And, no, I won't be installing random apps to fix Apple's shortcomings.)Terence Eden (@edent)Mon, 20 Jun 2022 15:43 +0000
Almost every pop star in the 80s and 90s owes their career to Kate Bush because, on her first and only tour in 1979, she and her sound engineer created the first ever live headset out of an old clothes hanger because she needed a way to sing live and dance at the same time.

Once upon a time, I was an heavy practitioner of Conference-Driven Development. I applied to speak at conferences and present technologies I had only prototyped. Again, I'm writing abstracts about tech I'm about to create. I'm thrilled to present this to you in fall.

If you can be emasculated by a meal were you really that manly to start with?

Hi Seth, I'm the New York Mets beat writer for The Federalist. Can I use your tweet in my article about how some men are insecure with their sexuality to the point that they are afraid of eating food at a certain time? Thanks in advance.

Obligatory: masculinity isn't real. It's just a set of made up, contradictory rules that people, usually men, inflict on themselves, preventing themselves from enjoying many of life's joys, giving themselves lasting trauma, and inflicting that pain on everyone else.Mekka 💉💉💉🎉 *My Mask Protects You* Okereke (@mekkaokereke)Mon, 20 Jun 2022 15:20 +0000
Imma tell you like this: If you can be emasculated by eggs Benedict or a stack of pancakes, then just give up now. You weren't going to make it. Surrender to the abyss of *checks notes* femininity, and suffer the eternal pain of *checks notes* enjoying meals with your family.Post details

Code isn't poetry. It's more like pottery. Everbody starts with a useless lump of clay and then you keep turning and refining it until it eventually serves its purpose.Max Böck (@mxbck)Mon, 20 Jun 2022 06:28 +0000
