someone just told me my "communist empire is falling to pieces" and i cannot emphasize enough that when you try to insult someone, it is crucial to not accidentally make them sound way cooler or more powerful than they actually are

Plus, doing the right thing raises awareness. I know this because *I* did not actually know that word was a slur derived from a specific condition. I’ve been lucky in my ignorance that word hasn’t been part of my vocabulary for a very long time, but now I’m aware.

If you’re not Black, stay out of it. If people use it affectionately within their own community, that’s not a slur the way it is when a non-Black person uses it. Even if you don’t like it, it’s not your job to police how Black people talk to each other.

Lizzo used an ableist slur in her new song and was immediately called out. She acknowledged the harm, apologized, and showed she would do better by changing the lyric. Within days. She didn’t center herself or double down. Someone find me the staples button.

if you or a peer was subjected to a spontaneous 10x engineer refactor you may be entitled to financial compensation

Anyway, nobody is under any obligation to listen to me ever, BUT: Attrition is expensive, and an on-call situation that isn’t just cruise control for burnout is extremely useful for both recruiting and retaining talented engineers. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I run a primary, a secondary, and an escalation on call. This ensures: - On-call is adequately supported - People who have spent their whole careers on call are not initial triage points - People can rotate on/off incidents to rest - People spend more time off than on call

We, as folks in the tech industry, really need to take a deep look at how we handle on calls We can’t say, on one hand, say that we want to encourage folks to have a healthy work life balance while also saying that every third week, you have to sleep with a pager.

More tech things need a "conceptual overview", which explains the why and core ideas to an outsider who wants to know what it's all about, but isn't necessarily interested in deeply understanding it. Lemme try doing this with vim:

I'm divided on this particular argument but spend a day reading through the hair transplant reddit or any space online for men and hairloss and you will quickly realize that hair transplants are incredibly gender affirming for men. They talk about hairloss like it's castration.

How old were you when you found out the watermelon 🍉 stereotype on Black People came from white people hating on the success of Black Farmers making a fortune selling the fruit. They used the stereotype to slow sales and taint our view of our own thriving businesses. I was 42.

A little Flora update. She's 9.5 months old, is cutting her third tooth, is crawling at supersonic speed, can pull up to standing and walk holding onto furniture, and we're pretty sure her first word will be 'Audrey' (one of our cats). She's an absolute delight ☀️
