Fucking THANK YOU this is the first time I’ve ever in my life seen a major publication headline actually frame it correctly. “According to a new report by economists at the Federal Reserve, [the Millennials killed everything] genre of news analysis is pure fiction.”

It’s true that the Web 2.0 we wanted (API-centric, 3rd-party-client-friendly) is not the Web 2.0 we got (piles of teetering, centralized XMLHttpRequest). But if you don’t understand why that happened, then it’s absolutely going to happen again.

How can we even start talking about supply chain security and sustainability if a maintainer publishing a bad npm package version breaks everyone instantly? Stable, deterministic pinning is table stakes. theverge.com/2022/1/9/22874…

Nope. Absolutely, completely, incorrect. Total nonsense. OSS maintainers don't owe you anything. Says so right on the license. If you can't read, maybe stay off the internet.

Mute account is three taps from the post you're muting, the start of the mute word interface is under some safety category in account settings. I can totally understand purely from an expedience POV why someone might mute account instead.

The “people miss out on advancement if they’re remote” takes should really read “outdated models of company culture have relied on personal casual relationships, over collaborative working ones, for advancement”

People think decentralization is some magic that solves all problems, when in reality most people have opted into using centralized systems without even realizing it because they prefer convenience over autonomy.

Often OSS developers make the world keep the lights on but aren't compensated for their time. Marak was struggling, asked help. Got nothing. In protest, removed his code and github suspended his account for removing something he owned the rights to.

This is one of the most important aspects of Web 2.0 that web3 advocates have tried to retcon. That generation also started with optimistic creators talking about decentralized, user-owned, open protocols (open standards, even!) that would empower people. Guess how it played out.

The % discount will vary on things like the mission, your career prospects etc. You could say “I’m fine taking a 30% cut from my market value: but not more.” It can be negotiation grounds for equity & others. No one benefits from you keeping your market value a secret.

Getting more messages along the lines of "I like my company, they treat me well, but I got an offer with a 50-200% pay increase as a sr software engineer. I'd feel guilty leaving." You now know your market value. You can offer them to stay for XX% less than this value.
