Our 4th annual year-end wrap-up episode! We don’t naval gaze often, but when we do… we make sure you get your money’s worth. Reflections, most popular episodes, our favs, and new this year: listener voice mails. Thanks for listening! 💚

This week we’re joined by Nora Jones, founder and CEO at Jeli where they help teams gain insight and learnings from incidents. Back in December Nora shared here thoughts in a Changelog post titled “Incident” shouldn’t be a four-letter word - which got a lot of attention from our readers. Today we’re talking with Nora a...

Just hired a FT Senior DevOps for our team, and soon hiring a FT Senior Developer and I have zero plans to do any coding tests. I've found over the years most code tests tell me nothing about the future performance of a team member. Talking about their goals does.Post details
Their current interview process: - No Leetcode-style interviews (coding in a vacuum) - No coding for senior hires: opting for conversations instead - Managers spend 30-50% of their time on hiring, and making the process better, at this stage. fonoa.com/careers#open-r…Gergely Orosz (@GergelyOrosz)Sun, 06 Feb 2022 13:24 GMT

When I did 4 months of looking for a new job last year I did a lot of code tests. All it did was piss me off how arbitrary some of them were. They told me more about the company I'd be joining though, which helped me realise a lot of companies still don't know how to hire.Tane Piper (@tanepiper)Sun, 06 Feb 2022 13:35 GMT
After quarantine my strip club had a mask mandate and I had to perform rigorous cardio for up to eight hours while wearing one. You are a soft little baby.

i feel like this idea that wearing a mask isn't disruptive or annoying is largely held by people who don't have to wear them very much and are totally ok not doing activities for which masking is impossible (i.e. sharing a meal with someone outside your household)

I thought I was being smart by rounding up the payment into the “mortgage” pot to the nearest whole £, as I figured I’d eventually have enough leftover that it paid itself for a month. I just did the maths on that: 3071 months, or 255 years. I’m not very smart. 🙃
Issy Long (@issyl0)Sun, 06 Feb 2022 13:20 GMT
This obviously assumes you are in the luxurious position of not scraping to make ends meet, in which case obviously arrange it so you have to pay as little as possible and assume circumstances change in future
Russell Howe (@rhowe212)Sun, 06 Feb 2022 13:29 GMT
The way I did it is to arrange the mortgage with the longest term possible so that the required monthly payment is low, then choose a monthly payment I'm happy with. It doesn't feel like overpaying then, and you've given yourself some headroom if you need to take a payment break

I’d still argue for starting with Heroku. Dockerise your app, use Heroku with Docker, move to Kubernetes in the future. If you survive.Post details
We are only just about now reaching the point where I would have argued that a new startup should start on k8s on the technical merits, but the staffing and skill distribution is way out in front. CW: suicide If you haven’t watched the documentary Time: The Kalief Browder story I recommend it highly. Kalief spent like 2 years in solitary at Riker’s pretrial because he couldn’t make bail. He was accused of stealing a backpack. He later committed suicide.Post details
A big part of the reason for the difference between some white folks and most Black folks views on bail reform, is that most white folk know that for them, there is almost no chance that they will ever be arrested and charged for a crime for which they are 100% innocent. twitter.com/ShimminyKricke…Mekka 💉💉💉🎉 *My Mask Protects You* Okereke (@mekkaokereke)Sat, 05 Feb 2022 17:51 GMT

Arguably Spotify doesn't really help with discovery if you aren't already known outside of the platform. This is arguably different from blogs vs. Twitter.
Gordon Haff (@ghaff)Sat, 05 Feb 2022 18:14 GMT
I'm somewhat amused at the Spotify/Rogan fracas being framed as an example of the death of the "open web" given that podcasts generally are pretty much the last bastion of RSS and there's zero requirement to sign a licensing deal with someone like Spotify.
