me in 2019: why did nobody write about the influenza pandemic in the 1920s? why don't we see anything about spanish flu in music and art and literature of the time? why is it like this unnamed, forgotten historical event not present in the cultural products? me in 2022: oh, sureok give me a second (@audendum)Sat, 19 Nov 2022 05:00 GMT
This week on The Changelog we’re joined by Adam Wiggins, co-founder and former CTO of Heroku, for an exclusive trip down Heroku memory lane. Adam and Jerod are both tremendous fans of Heroku and believe (to this day) they represent the apex in developer experience for delivering code to production. We talk through the ...

My allistic partner was just talking to me about how socially distressing it is to frequently be the only person wearing a mask in a room and tbh it has never even occurred to my autistic ass to be embarrassed about it.

It's an old standard to differentiate regular users ($) from root users (#) Yea I agree on removing them, better yet have GH flavoured markdown to include $ as non selectable text at the start of ```bash markdown @githubdesign @github #githubΑⅼех (@sifex)Mon, 21 Nov 2022 14:02 GMT
Yeah I get that -- though I've personally never once found that indication useful. Better to just tell the user to run the command as root, than use a symbol I'd bet not many know about or understand without Googling.

Elon has taken over a global company and is acting like it is a purely American entity. And only seems to care about its cultural impact in that country. This all supports the idea that his reason to takeover the company is politically driven.

#Nottingham Castle news. Dismayed to hear this! People saying in comments it had been on the cards, but I had no idea. Went there in the summer, lovely place to look out across the city from. I really hope that whatever happens with the building, the grounds can be kept open.Post details

Joe (@jna_sh)Mon, 21 Nov 2022 11:16 GMT
And to be clear, again I'm not defending Masto or particularly the federated aspect. Y'all have heard me say that I think decentralized nerds (including Matrix/Element) put the tech babble ahead of usability a million times. It's just a funny time to start caring about this issue

Boycott the World Cup? Absolutely not. Instead we will go there and use our presence to highlight the issues and hold power to account. But only if they let us, and no one feels uncomfortable, and we don’t actually have to do anything.

Wearing one was an easy gesture that externalised homophobia and transphobia as something bad that only really happens in other countries. Now we know general solidarity with LGBTQ people extends to the limits of “not watching football” and “maybe getting a yellow card”
Huw Lemmey (@huwlemmey)Mon, 21 Nov 2022 10:31 GMT
My hot take is that not wearing an armband is a more meaningful political gesture than wearing one because it highlights just how limited real solidarity for LGBTQ people is in English society, rather than making a vague gesture about homophobia being a “foreign problem”

🖊️I write about tech, mental health and other things on my website: https://localghost.dev I write intentionally and openly about mental health, burnout and other things, as I think we have a habit of glamourising “hustle” and working all hours even when it’s making us miserable. I want to normalise talking about mental health matters and putting your wellbeing first.
